AI Image Generator for Inkscape: Stable Diffusion & DALL·E
The AI Image Generator extension brings Stable Diffusion, DALL·E, and Flux directly into Inkscape, eliminating the friction of context-switching between tools. Generate, edit, and iterate on AI images without leaving your canvas—with support for multiple providers and one-click positioning.
Generate AI Images Directly Inside Inkscape Using Stable Diffusion & DALL·E
Every time you want to test an AI-generated image concept, you’re stuck in the same loop: sketch in Inkscape → open browser → navigate to DALL·E or Stable Diffusion → wait for generation → download → import back into Inkscape → repeat. You lose context, waste time, and break creative momentum.
The AI Image Generator extension eliminates that friction entirely.
What This Is
The AI Image Generator is a free, open-source Inkscape extension that lets you generate, edit, and iterate on images using Stable Diffusion, DALL·E, Flux, or any supported provider—without leaving your canvas. Write a prompt, click apply, and watch the generated image appear directly on your artboard.
Key capabilities:
- Generate images from text prompts
- Create variations and edits of existing images
- Switch between multiple AI providers (OpenAI, Replicate, Flux)
- Adjust quality, style, size, and diffusion parameters
- Auto-save all generations with timestamps
- Position and scale images on canvas with one click
Prerequisites
You’ll need:
- Inkscape 1.0 or later (tested on 1.2+)
- Git (for cloning the repository)
- An API key from at least one provider: OpenAI (DALL·E), Replicate (Stable Diffusion, Flux), or Flux (direct access)
- A text editor for config files
- Internet connection (all computation happens on provider servers)
No special GPU or processing power required—roughly 50MB of disk space for extension files.
Installation & Setup
Step 1: Clone the Repository
git clone https://github.com/[author]/inkscape-ai-image-generator.git
Step 2: Find Your Extensions Folder
Open Inkscape and go to Edit → Preferences → System → User Extensions. Note the folder path shown at the top of the dialog.
Step 3: Create a Subdirectory
In your file manager, navigate to the User Extensions folder and create a new folder:
image-generator
Step 4: Copy Extension Files
From the cloned repository, copy these files into your image-generator folder:
ai_image_generator.pyai_image_generator.inxconfig.json(example file)
Step 5: Configure Your API Keys
In the image-generator folder, create or edit config.json:
{
"openai_api_key": "sk-your-actual-key-here",
"replicate_api_token": "r8_your-token-here",
"flux_api_key": "your-flux-key-if-applicable",
"default_provider": "openai",
"default_model": "dall-e-3"
}
⚠️ Never commit or share this file. Treat API keys like passwords.
Step 6: Restart Inkscape
Close Inkscape completely, then relaunch it.
Step 7: Verify Installation
Go to Extensions → Generate → AI Image Generator. If you see the menu item, you’re ready to go.
Core Workflow
Open the Panel
Navigate to Extensions → Generate → AI Image Generator. The extension panel docks on the right side of your workspace.
Configure Your Generation
Set these parameters:
- Provider: OpenAI, Replicate, or Flux
- Model: DALL·E 3, Stable Diffusion, Flux, etc.
- Image Size: Choose presets or custom dimensions (e.g., 1024×1024 for DALL·E 3)
- Quality: Standard or HD (provider-dependent)
- Style: Natural, Vivid, or provider-specific options
- Number of Images: Generate 1–4 in one batch
⚠️ Size matters. Different models support different dimensions. DALL·E 3 only accepts 1024×1024, 1024×1792, or 1792×1024. Stable Diffusion typically wants multiples of 64 (512×512, 768×768, etc.). Check your provider’s docs.
Write Your Prompt
Be specific and descriptive. Example:
“A minimalist book cover design with a single red geometric shape on white background, modern sans-serif typography, professional publishing aesthetic”
Click Apply
The extension sends your prompt to the API. Wait 5–30 seconds. A progress indicator shows the status.
Image Lands on Canvas
Once complete, the image appears automatically at the center of your artboard. Use the “Placement” dropdown to reposition it (top-left, center, bottom-right, etc.).
Iterate or Edit
To create a variation, modify your prompt and click Apply again.
To edit an existing image:
- Select it on canvas
- Switch mode to “Edit Image”
- Enter an editing instruction: “add more books to the shelf”
- Adjust the Strength slider (0.0–1.0) to control how much changes
- Click Apply
Practical Example: Book Cover Design
You’re designing a sci-fi novel cover and want to test three directions without context switching.
Iteration 1: Base Concept
- Provider: OpenAI (DALL·E 3)
- Size: 1024×1024
- Prompt: “Futuristic book cover for a sci-fi thriller. Minimalist design. Glowing blue geometric shapes on a dark space background. White sans-serif title area at bottom.”
Result: A sleek, glowing design. You like the palette but want more depth.
Iteration 2: Edit for Depth
- Mode: Edit Image
- Strength: 0.6
- Instruction: “Add layered depth with multiple planes of geometric shapes. Keep the blue glow. Make it feel more dimensional.”
Result: Better visual hierarchy. The shapes feel more layered.
Iteration 3: Alternative Direction
- Mode: Generate
- Prompt: “Sci-fi book cover with a large spherical planet in the center, cosmic dust clouds, neon purple and cyan lighting, cinematic depth, professional book design”
Result: A completely different concept. You now have two strong directions to compare side-by-side.
All three images auto-save with timestamps—you never lose a generation.
Common Issues
“Invalid API Key” Error
Double-check your config.json. Verify you copied the full key from your provider’s dashboard with no extra spaces. Restart Inkscape after updating.
Image Size Not Supported
DALL·E 3 only accepts 1024×1024, 1024×1792, or 1792×1024. Stable Diffusion wants multiples of 64. Check your provider’s docs and adjust accordingly.
Image Quality Drops When Editing
This is normal. Try lowering Strength (e.g., 0.4 instead of 0.8) for gentler edits. Use more specific editing instructions.
Extension Doesn’t Appear in Menu
Verify file placement: User Extensions/image-generator/ai_image_generator.py. Close Inkscape completely (don’t just minimize), then relaunch. Check folder structure.
Long Wait Times or Timeouts
Some providers queue during peak hours. Try again in a few minutes. Check your internet connection and API account status (sufficient credits).
Next Steps
- Experiment with providers. OpenAI for polished results, Replicate for experimental models like Flux.
- Tweak advanced parameters. Increase sampling steps (20–50) for better quality. Adjust seed values for reproducible results.
- Build a prompt library. Keep a document of prompts that work well for your style. Reuse and remix them.
- Combine workflows. The creator also built an SVG generation extension—use both for vector and raster in one workspace.
- Share your discoveries. Found an effective technique? Contribute it back to the GitHub project.
Local model support is coming soon, letting you generate offline without API costs.
